Epic Games has reached a settlement with U.S. federal regulators to pay $245 million to players who fell victim to “illegal billing practices” in Fortnite.
According to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission), Epic Games used a design practice known as “dark patterns” to hide purchasing options within Fortnite.
In-game cosmetic items can be bought through microtransactions. According to the FTC, an accidental tap on any menu button could result in an unwanted charge.
Epic Games was also accused of blocking user accounts that disputed purchases, causing them to lose access to game content.
On Monday (December 9), the FTC announced that it would send $72 million as the first installment of refunds to nearly 630,000 customers affected by the issue.
Players will receive refunds via PayPal and checks. Those who believe they are eligible for a refund must submit a claim by January 10. Customers can redeem payments within 30 days on PayPal and have 90 days to cash the checks.
